Marc Marquez had a difficult start to his weekend at Catalunya (12th, 12th and 9th in free practices) but when it was time to qualify for tomorrow’s Moto2 race he pulled out everything he had from his Suter and took a surprising pole position in 1:46.
187 – his fourth of this 2012 season and his 11th in GP racing.
Marquez pipped his closest rivals, standings leader Pol Espargaro (they are separated by just 1 point) by 0.
195s and by 0.
243s over Le Mans winner Thomas Luthi who is currently third in the standings and just two points behing the Spaniard.
Andrea ‘Crazy Joe’ Iannone took fourth with his last flying lap and he was just 0.
047s from the Suter Interwetten Paddock rider, while Simone Corsi (FTR Iodaracing Project) was fifth with a surprising Dominique Aegerter (Suter Technomag CIP) in sixth.
Scott Redding was unable to repeat his morning performance (1st in FP3) and ended up seventh.
Toni Elias, Tito Rabat and Alex de Angelis closed out the top ten, with the Sammarinese the last rider to be within a second of Marquez.
Julian Simon had another bad crash (his second of the day), while Ricky Cardus showed us a circus number during qualifying.
The Arguinano Racing Team rider bumped into Takaaki Nakagami on the straight and going down he got caught on Nakagami’s exhaust pipe pulling the Italtrans Racing Team rider and bike over the striped kerb and the Spaniard was finally was able to get loose and safely slid off into the gravel trap, leaving Nakagami safe, but with his Kalex’s exhaust pointing almost 90°outwards.
