An investigation is underway into a fatal blaze that occurred within a residential property located on the grounds of the University of Limerick. The unfortunate victim was a mature gentleman, speculated to be either in his late eighties or early nineties, believed to have been a scholar. His body was discovered at the scene following the fire outbreak at a dwelling in Kilmurry Village just before the stroke of midnight.
The emergency was reported at 11:41 pm leading to the deployment of four service units, inclusive of a high-rise platform, from fire brigades stationed in Limerick City and Cappamore. The fire was battled for five hours by the Limerick City and County Fire Service’s firefighters. They devoted their time to extinguishing the flames and cooling the area down before eventually returning to their bases post 5 am.
Gardaí officers maintain their presence at the location and are assessing every detail pertaining to the cause of the blaze. A spokesperson for the Garda stated that the area is currently being preserved for a detailed technical examination. In addition, a postmortem analysis will be performed. The results derived from both the technical and postmortem examinations will shape the trajectory of the Garda’s inquiry.
The University of Limerick has been approached for a statement on this tragic incident.
