Man Charged in €2.5m Drug Seizure

A Lithuanian man, identified as Arunas Songaila (56), who has no permanent residence, has been brought before Judge Geraldine Carty at Kilkenny District Court’s special seating regarding the seizure of illegal drugs valued at €2.5m from Rosslare Europort the past Friday. Songaila was presented with charges under Section 15, concerning the possession of cocaine, a controlled drug, with intentions of selling or supplying under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Defence Solicitor Eileen O’Neill clearly stated that there would be no request for bail.

Sergeant Victor Isdell has submitted an application to adjourn the case, with the suspect remaining in custody, to Wexford District Court, scheduled for Tuesday, October 15th. Court was also informed by Ms O’Neill that she intended to apply at a later point for free legal representation.

In a related case, an astounding 36 kilograms of what is believed to be cocaine was seized by the Revenue officers during an inspection on a truck which had just disembarked from a ferry at Rosslare Europort on the said Friday morning.

Separately, another Lithuanian national in his mid-fifties faced the Carlow District Court in connection with a drug capture worth €2.1m at the south Wexford port the prior morning. The man, Evgenignus Kavialivkas, with no confirmed address, was charged under Section 15, pertaining to the possession of cocaine intended for unlawful sale or supply in accordance to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

After it was asserted by Defence Counsel Brian Mulvaney that there would be no bail appeal, Judge Carty ordered that Kavialivkas be kept in custody and set the next court date as Tuesday, October 15th, at Wexford District Court.
