A man, aged 23, was brought to the Cork District Court on charges related to a string of serious crimes that took place in the northern area of the city earlier in the month. Jamie Russell, residing on Harbour View Road in Knocknaheeny, Cork city, stands accused of firing a firearm irresponsibly, owning a firearm, owning ammunition, causing injury through hazardous driving, and operating a vehicle without insurance or a valid driver’s license. He is also looking at charges relating to theft, unauthorized use of a vehicle, hit-and-run, and criminal damage. All the supposed crimes were committed on the 23rd of August.
Det Garda Mick Dolan informed Judge John King about charging Mr. Russell with 10 offences at 10.41pm on Friday at the Gurranabraher Garda station. He also mentioned that the accused remained silent when the charges were read to him under warning.
They are still awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the matter. Inspector Dave Noonan made it clear that there was nothing against granting Mr Russell bail. Nevertheless, a bail application wasn’t put forward at that moment.
Mahon Corkery, a barrister, applied for legal aid on behalf of his client. The court granted assistance since Mr Russell is a social welfare recipient. The judge commanded Mr Russell to be kept in custody until he appears again, via video link, in the Cork District Court on the 6th of September.
Details regarding the case were not presented on Saturday.
