Man Arrested in Football Bribery

As part of an active inquiry into the suspected bribery of a League of Ireland footballer, the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau’s Anti-Bribery and Corruption Unit has taken a man into custody. The male in question, aged in his 30s, was apprehended on Tuesday and kept under the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, Section 4 at a police station in the west part of the country. It is believed the bribery incident occurred during the present football season.

The man has been let go without any charges, meanwhile, a dossier is being compiled for the Public Prosecution Director. The Garda is encouraging anyone with insight about fraudulent practices in sports or match-fixing to confidentially disclose it. They can do so either via the Corruption and Bribery Confidential Report line on 1800 40 60 80, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or at their nearest Garda station.
