Man Accused of Ex-Partner’s Attempted Murder, Child Imprisonment

A man has been charged with attempting to murder his ex-partner with a knife in her Dublin residence about three months previously. The alleged attacker, a man in his mid-thirties whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons, stood before Judge Alan Mitchell in the Cloverhill District Court on Tuesday. The man, a foreign national with an address in Dublin’s north, had been held in detention since May.

His initial charges were inflicting severe harm on the woman, brandishing a kitchen knife that could cause significant harm during an attack in her western Dublin residence in May. In addition to these, he was charged with violating a protective order by observing the woman’s home on the very day and false imprisonment of her child during the course of events.

On the following Tuesday, he faced additional charges of attempted murder of the woman as directed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Garda Jennifer Greene informed Judge Mitchell that the DPP had ordered that the defendant be tried on an indictment.

The court learnt that there was a vast amount of CCTV evidence. The judge realised from the prosecutor that the minor involved in the attempted murder and assault charges was related to the woman. He placed reporting limitations to keep the child’s identity hidden, and ordered the defendant to remain in custody until the following week’s hearing. The man, who has not pleaded yet, remained silent during the proceedings in court and was put back into detention while the attorneys compile a book of evidence.
