In Palma de Mallorca, Spain, a tragedy struck when a beachfront building, known as the Medusa Beach Club, collapsed leaving at least four people dead and injuring 27 others, according to emergency services’ statement on a recent Thursday. The incident, which occurred around 7.30pm Irish time, has led to several individuals being feared as trapped under the debris.
Emergency services on the island shared posts indicating the confirmation of two fatalities and a range of injuries varying in severity amongst 12-14 people. The spokesperson for a local emergency response co-ordination centre revealed that an emergency response was initiated following the structure’s collapse on Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma where potential survivors could be trapped. Responders on the scene included firefighters and local police officers.
Up to now, it has not been revealed if the casualties and those injured were either the staff of the restaurant or the tourists. Inquiries are underway to determine the cause behind the structural failure.
On the ground to supervise the rescue operations and lend support to impacted families were the local mayor, Jaime Martínez, and his deputy, Javier Bonet, as disclosed by the TSC website. Local authorities are imploring anyone who has any information concerning the incident to aid ongoing investigations.
