In a stunning achievement at the Sky Bet Ebor in York, Magical Zoe dazzled her supporters with an unmistakable win. The mare, under the supervision of Henry de Bromhead, has consistently performed well in previous racing events, securing the second position in the Mares Novices’ Hurdle in 2023 at the Cheltenham Festivals. Not only that, she finished fourth following last year’s Ebor champion, Absurde, in the March County Hurdle.
Transitioning from the hurdles to flat racing, her maiden victory at Down Royal was commendable and she was a frontrunner in the stakes races. As a result, she was the chosen candidate in the market at 11-2 for the £500,000 headline event on the final day of the Ebor Festival and her victory was nothing short of convincing.
During the contest that lasted for one mile and six furlongs, the six-year-old mare commanded a lead near the end of the race. Guided by Billy Lee, Magical Zoe showcased her potential down the heart of the course, securing her lead in the final stretch.
Magical Zoe’s triumph kept the momentum going for Ireland in Britain as it marked the third victory in four years in esteemed flat handicaps, following Johnny Murtagh’s Sonnyboyliston in 2021 and Willie Mullins’ Absurde the previous year.
Following the victory, an ecstatic De Bromhead commented, “I’m pleased for the gentlemen [owners Patrick and Scott Bryceland] who recommended this venture and what a fantastic plan it was. The execution was perfect.” He went on to applaud Billy Lee for his brilliant riding, attributing much of the win to his efforts.
