“Lowry’s Biggest Career Payday Looms”

After three rounds of the Tour Championship, the significant FedEx Cup playoff and the season finale of the PGA Tour, Shane Lowry is poised for the most lucrative prize money he has ever earned, currently positioned in eighth place. Lowry moved five spots up to the leading 10, scoring six-under-par 65 at East Lake on the third day, 13 strokes under, trailing the leader Scottie Scheffler by 13.

On the final five holes, Scheffler carded four birdies, earning him a five-stroke lead into the last round against Collin Morikawa. Remaining in eighth place assures Lowry of a $2.25 million win, more than the money he pocketed for finishing in Comcast’s top 10 for the regular season play and the $1.94 million he earned from the 2019 Open Championship victory.

Lowry’s most successful finishes to date are his victory with Rory McIlroy at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and a third-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. So far this season, the man from Offaly has stacked up $8,095,881 on the PGA Tour, with six stints in the top 10 places.

He is just four strokes shy of Sahith Theegala’s third place, where he stands a chance of bagging $7.5 million if he landed there. There are also $5 million, $3.5 million, $2.75 million and $2 million on offer for finishing in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth places respectively.

As it stands, Scheffler is eyeing the $25 million top prize, with Morikawa hot on his heels and set for a $12.5 million reward. Morikawa, the only player within nine strokes of the world’s top-ranked golfer, performed consistently towards the last four holes at East Lake, scoring birdies in three for a 67. Tied for tenth place, McIlroy is 15 strokes behind after notching up a 68 addition to his initial rounds of 69.
