Long-Range Ballistic Missiles in Ukraine

I implore a response regarding Britain and other European nations, including Ireland, endorsing Ukraine’s defensive stance against Russia’s insurrection. The assumption was unity in resistance, which solely occurred in Ukraine.

However, recent events involving Ukraine’s offensive into Kursk, a Russian territory, have left me bewildered. To my knowledge, this was not an action we had consented to, and there’s been a conspicuous absence of repudiation expressively stated.

There is increasing speculation that Nato, along with the US, is deliberating over an alteration to their engagement protocols, permitting Ukraine to deploy Nato-furnished ballistic missiles against targets located in Russia. Risking such a hazardous venture could lead to severe repercussions, given Russia’s substantial inventory of ballistic missiles, some of which are equipped with tactical nuclear warheads.

One must evaluate the prudence of providing an impetus for risking the use of Nato’s long-range arms against the Russian mainland.

Putting aside Ireland’s non-Nato membership, we are still entitled to voice our perspectives. Do we applaud this alteration? Do we favour Kursk’s occupation? I await a definitive declaration from the Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheál Martin.

Yours sincerely,
CIAN Ó hEIGEARTAIGH,
DUBLIN 6.
