On Saturday, a tragic incident occurred off the coast of Donegal that claimed the life of a diver named Patrick Doran. Mr. Doran, a native of Leitrim village in Co Leitrim, was in his 40s. He was participating in a two-day diving event run by the Donegal Bay Sub Aqua Club, alongside over 100 other divers.
The event, named North West Dive Rally, had multiple dives planned at Malin Beg and Sliabh Liag. Disaster struck on Saturday around noon when it was reported that two divers were in peril. This launched a search and rescue effort orchestrated by the Malin Head Coast Guard.
Various agencies partook in the operation, including An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, Killybegs Coast Guard, shore crews, and the Rescue 118 helicopter. One of the divers was found in the sea but sadly, he was pronounced dead on the spot. This diver was later identified as Mr. Doran.
The second diver, a man in his 60s, managed to resurface and was treated on-site before being transported to Galway University Hospital for further care. He was diagnosed with a decompression illness commonly referred to as ‘the bends’.
Niamh Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and a local councillor based in Killybegs, expressed her shock and sadness at the news of the unfortunate event. Living in a coastal area, she acknowledged the inherent dangers the sea holds. She extended her sympathy to the bereaved family and wished the second diver a full recovery. Furthermore, she expressed her concerns for the Donegal Bay Sub Aqua Club, hosting the event, hoping they are coping well in the aftermath. Kennedy also highlighted the bravery of those involved in the search and rescue mission, commending their efforts and selflessness in risking their lives during such situations.
The remainder of the weekend event was abruptly cancelled following the disastrous incident. A representative from the Transport Department confirmed that a diving mishap in Teelin, around 12.20pm yesterday, was attended to by the Irish Coast Guard Marine Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) stationed in Malin.
