Limiting the quantity of holidaymakers

Dear Sir,

Guy Hedgecoe’s piece on the Spanish pushback against excessive tourism is a crucial warning of the detrimental impacts unchecked influx of tourists can impose on the local citizens and the environment. It is apparent from the agitation amongst the Spanish residents that they are pressing for restrictions on tourism. These locals express concerns about the burgeoning numbers of tourists leading to strain on local infrastructure, and an inflation in rent prices, creating affordability issues for residents.

Such issues appear to be striking a chord in the UK, with some interpreting this as a direct affront to British tourists in the aftermath of Brexit. Notwithstanding whether this conjecture holds any veracity, the potential fallout from Spain’s tourism restrains could result in an increase in the quantity of UK tourists visiting our land. Although an upswing in tourism can benefit us economically, it is important to manage the volume of visitors, to avert a repetition of Spain’s predicament. The urgency for an immediate, strategic government plan is clear for the sake of our communities and the environment.

Kind Regards,

Bobby Carty
