Leverkusen Clinches First Bundesliga Title

Bayer Leverkusen, unbeaten this season, won their first-ever Bundesliga title recently, crushing Werder Bremen with a score of 5-0. This marks a significant change after an 11-year dominance in the league by Bayern Munich. Led by the exemplary Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen has now set a record for playing 29 consecutive matches without a loss this season which led them to their first accolade since 1993. The team is now leading by 16 points with five games remaining.

A fantastic hat-trick by Florian Wirtz in the first game confirmed Leverkusen’s title, thus expanding their unbeaten streak across all competitions to an exceptional 43 matches this season. An early penalty was successfully taken by Victor Boniface, his first league goal since December and 11th of the season. He had recently returned after a three-month injury layoff.

Amine Adli also had the chance to amplify the lead in a match where Leverkusen primarily dominated the first half. Bremen returned to the field with defiance in the second half. Still, Granit Xhaka’s long-range shot at the 60-minute mark spurred ecstatic celebrations amongst spectators. Wirtz added to the jubilation with another goal eight minutes after.

Gearing up for the Euro 2024, Wirtz scored his final goal in the 83rd minute, while eager fans rushed the pitch momentarily. His hat-trick was completed in the last minute, ensuring a resounding victory for Leverkusen with a truly scorching performance that secured the title in style. (c) 2024 Thomson Reuters
