“Letter of Sympathy from the President”

Dear Editor,

A reader, in their correspondence of August 6th, took issue with President Michael D Higgins for his show of sympathy to Iran following the death of their president, as well as commending the freshly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian. This grievance was drawn from Iran’s known backing of terrorism and causing unrest in adjacent nations.

Does the same criticism apply to President Higgins offering sympathy or approval to the sitting or forthcoming presidents of the US? I posit that it would not.

Nonetheless, pondering over the fact of America’s provision of arms and explosives to Israel along with its track record of unsettling neighbouring (and even not-so-close) nations, are the two situations all that dissimilar?

With Kind Regards,
