When Leon Haslam fractured the tibia and fibula of his left leg during Friday morning practice at Assen a little more than three weeks ago, he targeted the Donington Psrk round for his return to action.
The Pata Honda rider underwent surgery in the UK where doctors inserted a pin from his knee to ankle and three screws, and now he is ready to return to action for his home race after undergoing treatment and therapy, but he’ll first have to undergo a medical examination and a fitness test at the circuit on Thursday, before he will be allowed to ride.
Haslam, who will celebrate his 30th birthday on Friday May 31st said, “It’s just over three weeks since I broke my leg at Assen and, while that might not seem very long, it feels like ages to me.
Since the operation to pin the leg, I’ve been doing everything I can to get it ready to get back on the bike.
I’ve got to pass a medical of course, and then see how it feels on the bike, but at the moment I’m aiming to ride.
Donington is my home race, so it’s a really special event for me and I know the circuit pretty well.
I got a couple of good results on a private CBR at Donington in 2009 and could’ve had a couple of wins last year, so I’ll continue doing everything I can to get on the bike on Friday and see how it goes.
All Japan Superbike champion and HRC test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi replaced Haslam at Monza, where he finished 14th in race 1 and crashed out in race 2.
