“Legislation associated with ‘aided death'”

Gino Kenny TD appears eager to legislate based on the recent report from the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying, claiming that it reflects the public’s supportive stance on legalising assisted dying (Letters, March 28th). However, it remains ambiguous how he has inferred this as the Committee didn’t openly invite public input. What’s more, he omits the revealing fact that the Committee was notably split on the matter. Of the 14 members, three cast their vote against the report while one remained neutral. A minority report was issued by three members, inclusive of the Committee chair, which hardly poses a strong validation of the final report.

The matter now warrants presentation in a referendum, or at the bare minimum, discussion in a citizens’ assembly for the Irish public requires time to weigh the intricate facets of this issue and the potential aftermath of any decision. Sincerely,
