“Leamy: Zebo’s God-given Talent Massive”

Simon Zebo, the always-interesting 34-year-old Munster player, has proven once again that he’s not yet ready to retire. Following two noteworthy performances recently in South Africa and despite questioning his professional future earlier this season, Zebo evidences a comeback. This comes after Munster’s loss to Northampton in the Champions Cup just last month.

Chosen over Mike Haley for recent games, Zebo showed there’s still much left to offer post-recovery from injury. His infectious enthusiasm, both on and off the field, doesn’t only bring joy but also sets a high standard of team spirit, as highlighted by Munster’s defence coach Denis Leamy. Leamy praised Zebo’s remarkable in-game instincts and innate talent, labelling him among the best he has played and coached.

In light of the upcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) knockout stage and the last three matches next in line, Zebo, Calvin Nash, and Shane Daly were seen playing in the back three together in both games against the Bulls and the Lions. Their collaboration resulting in bonus points achieved in both matches. According to Leamy, Zebo’s key attribute is his ability to envisage players’ moves beforehand, thus minimising his need for tackles.

This weekend, as Munster gears up for a derby game against Connacht at Thomond Park, a reshuffle may be on the cards for the matchday squad. Zebo, whose previous seasons have been marred by injuries and reduced game time, is hoped to maintain fitness for the impending matches against Connacht, Edinburgh and Ulster before the quarter-finals of the URC in June’s first week.

Leamy lauded Zebo’s effectiveness in positioning players and his foresight in play development, considering him particularly adept. He also highlighted Zebo’s contribution to mentoring younger players, enhancing their vision and understanding of the game, reflecting on his considerable influence and aptitude for player-coaching.
