Chris Hurley, a father of one, tragically lost his life in a solo-vehicle accident near Farranamoy, Kinsale in Cork County on Wednesday evening. Shortly after 7pm, authorities and emergency services were alerted about the accident that took place on the R607.
Mr Hurley, who was in his 50s, was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Upon arrival of the emergency services, he was declared deceased at the scene. Subsequently, his body was transported to Cork University Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Living in McSwiney’s Villas in Cork, Mr Hurley leaves behind his wife Mairéad and son David. His parents, David and Eily, predeceased him.
Several organisations took the opportunity to express their condolences to Mr. Hurley’s family. Among these were Ballygarvan GAA, Ballygarvan Ladies Football and the Ballygarvan Camogie Club, who released a statement expressing their sorrow on social media. Many kids from Ballygarvan National School, where Mairéad is principal, and young players of the Ballygarvan GAA team, where David plays, are familiar with the Hurley family.
Having formerly worked at Guys and Thermo Fisher, Mr Hurley’s body will be laid out at the Wilton Funeral Home in Cork from 3pm to 4pm on the upcoming Sunday. His Requiem mass to be held at 11am on Monday in the Church of the The Way of the Cross in Togher, Co Cork, followed by burial at St James Cemetery in Chetwynd.
The Gardaí are urging any witnesses of the accident to come forward. They are keen especially on anyone who may have video footage, including dashcam footage, captured between 6.30pm to 7.15pm on Wednesday. They requesting anyone with potential information to contact Bandon Garda station, the Garda Confidential Line or any local Garda station.
