Caoimhín Kelleher, the Republic of Ireland’s goalkeeper, is keen on departing from Liverpool, feeling his career isn’t progressing at the club he joined in 2015 as a teenager. The upcoming arrival of Georgia’s top goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, along with the existing presence of Brazil’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, at Anfield, have largely impacted his decision.
Facing the prospect of the Nations League match against Greece at the Aviva Stadium, the 25-year-old from Cork expressed his desire to secure a position as a leading goalkeeper and play consistently, a goal he’s held for the past few years. He feels that Liverpool’s decision to recruit another goalkeeper, Mamardashvili, indicates a shift in their strategy, a situation over which he admits he has little control.
He made attempts to exit Liverpool the previous summer and in January of last year, when his proposed transition to Nottingham Forest was halted. However, interest from Celtic, Brighton, and Brentford did not materialise into a definite transfer. Kelleher clarified that he wishes to secure a primary position and play constantly, despite claims of previous bid rejections by Liverpool.
Even though he hasn’t seen much action with Liverpool this season due to Becker, Kelleher’s performance in the recent 2-0 defeat to England in Dublin has demonstrated his skills for Ireland. He emphasised his lack of control over the situation, reiterating his desire to play more frequently.
