“Joyce’s academic endeavours in the realm of femininity”

Dear Editor,

It was with keen interest that I devoured Frank McNally’s recent piece on the centennial celebrations of Joyce’s Mamalujo section at Mullingar House in Dublin (17th April). The piece, engagingly described the integration of HCE into the plaque and the commemorative reading attached to it wonderfully. Yet, to my disappointment, the interpretative performance of The Washerwomen by a wholly female troupe was disregarded.

In 2024, as we endeavour to cultivate a more inclusive environment, it becomes imperative to acknowledge the achievements made by all genders in fields traditionally monopolised by men, such as the study of Joyce.

To pay tribute to these gifted female individuals would not just enrich our cultural conversation, but also embrace the diverse viewpoints that were applauded by Joyce himself. – Yours, sincerely,

Kay O’Hea, Glenageary, Dublin.
