John Wilson recommends a refreshing white and a comforting red, both available at O’Brien’s

This week at O’Briens, two distinct wines are featured, promoting them until the 10th of Sunday. The South African Chenin Blanc is particularly noteworthy, exhibiting styles varying from a crisp, refreshing taste to a more rich, textured one. The special selection for this week, the MAN Chenin Banc, straddles these two styles, yet leans more towards the refreshing side. Its quality and reasonable price make it a fantastic bargain.

Portugal’s Douro Valley is traditionally associated with port production, but in recent times they’ve been venturing into the creation of exceptional red table wines too. A prime example of this would be the Altano.

The MAN Organic Chenin Blanc 2023, sourced from Cape Coast, South Africa, boasts an organic classification. Bursting with fresh, vibrant flavours reminiscent of ripe cantaloupe and peaches. It pairs beautifully with grilled sea bass, salmon or tuna, but is just as delightful consumed alone. With a 13% alcohol volume, it’s available for £12.95, a significant drop from the original £16.95 at O’Briens.

The Altano Douro 2021, produced by the Symington Family Estates in Portugal, is settled with warm ripe red fruits and a hint of spice. An excellent companion to grilled pork, herby meatballs or aubergines in a spicy tomato sauce. Its quality surpasses its price tag. This wine with a 13.5% alcohol volume can be scooped up for only £11.95, down from £14.95 – also available at O’Briens.
