John Moran, Limerick’s mayor-select, is slated for inauguration in St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday morning. Having formerly worked with the Department of Finance and achieved significant recognition during the austere times post the 2008 economic meltdown, he also has experience in the Central Bank of Ireland and Zurich Capital Markets in the private sphere.
Mr Moran trusts that his financial domain expertise would be valuable in his forthcoming role. He expressed his surprise and gratitude towards the citizens for adopting this fresh democratic method for choosing a mayor for their region, a practice he hopes to see adopted nationally.
The inaugural meeting of the new council will happen in the council chambers at Dooradoyle on Friday afternoon. During his interview with RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Moran expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with elected councillors and the council executive for the next half-decade to cultivate a more thriving, ambitious and prosperous Limerick.
The mayor-elect voiced his belief that his expertise would be instrumental in navigating the housing crisis, and suggested the development of homes on government-owned land as a means to expedite housing supply. ‘In Limerick, we have an abundance of State land, and we cannot create houses from nothing.’ he stated.
“For swift-action, we’re considering short-term fixes like the construction of prefab modular homes, which can be swiftly installed in large quantities on State land while the rest of the communities are being developed,” he added.
