Joe El-Abd Named England Defence Coach

Joe El-Abd, the ex-flanker for Bristol and Toulon, is set to take over as England defence coach, having been chosen to succeed Felix Jones. The move was confirmed by the English Rugby Football Union, following Jones’ unexpected resignation in August.

Currently aged 44, El-Abd will assume his new position during the autumn Tests and Six Nations this year, whilst still functioning as a rugby director at Oyonnax. Following his tenure at the French second division club next year, he will dedicate all his time to England.

Steve Borthwick, England’s head coach, has welcomed El-Abd’s induction into their coaching system, commending his in-depth knowledge, evident love for the game, and his proven track record of shaping high-performing teams. He opined that El-Abd emulates the qualities cherished in the England Rugby team and will contribute positively to their organisational culture whilst enhancing their ongoing performance.

El-Abd initially joined Oyonnax as a player-coach before returning as the director of rugby in 2019, following a four-year stint as the defence and forwards coach at Castres, a French Top 14 club.

Expressing his anticipation to start as the England defence coach, El-Abd commented further that he was intrigued by the potential progression trajectory of the England team under Steve’s administration. He said he found Steve’s zest inspiring and was impressed with his clear-sightedness for the team.

Strongly passionate about defence, El-Abd cordially welcomed the chance to contribute significantly in shaping a defence that will be a significant determinant of England’s future successes.

El-Abd’s stint will commence in England’s upcoming autumn matches starting with New Zealand at Twickenham on the 2nd of November, and will include games against South Africa, Japan and Australia.
