May has arrived at last and the city of Bari in the South of Italy is now making ready to celebrate San Nicola of Bari, the Patron Saint of the city; in order to celebrate the beloved Saint several events will take place in Bari from 7 to 9 May, including a magnificent pageant featuring more that 400 people.
The image of San Nicola will leave the small port of San Giorgio and then after a short journey by boat reach the famous Church of San Nicola in the heart of the city where people will be eagerly waiting for his arrival and listening to the hymns played on the chimes in the big church tower.
Saint Nicholas of Myra was one of the most loved and venerated saints in the whole history of Christianity.
He died in Myra in 350 Ad and his body was then stolen by a group of sailors from Bari and taken to their city in 1087.
