Dr Declan Deasy was spot on in his August 7th correspondence by reinforcing the vulnerabilities of our global digital frameworks as discussed in Jack Horgan-Jones’s write-up about the menace of cyberattacks (“Ireland bracing for an escalated risk of cyberattacks in the following two years, echoes security centre”, News, August 6th).
Emphasising on Ireland, it is imperative that this issue serves as an alarm bell for those who naively consider that the most effective defence against external threats is to abandon our military neutrality. Opting for NATO and funnelling billions towards our Defence Forces are dated and wasteful lines of thought providing scant protection.
The highest external threats we face now emanate from the digital realm, not a physical invasion. It is therefore integral to ensure the presence of a well-resourced and strong cyber security framework within the country. Focusing on neutrality diverts from achieving this essential aim.
