“Irishman Killed in Malta, Ex-Partner Murdered”

An incident has unfolded in Malta where a man from Ireland, named by sources as Edward Johnston, was fatally shot by local police, subsequent to his supposed assassination of a woman. The victim, Nicolette Ghirxi, aged 48 and native to Malta, is thought to have been slain by Mr Johnston using a knife within her Birkirkara apartment, a city located on the eastern part of the main Maltese island. The pair are said to have previously shared a romantic relationship that had subsequently deteriorated.

The Irish diplomatic mission in Malta has verified that an Irish national was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. Ms Ghirxi’s lifeless body was discovered on Monday at 2 o’clock in the morning in her own apartment, whilst Mr Johnston was shot to death in the vicinity of the Hilton Hotel, approximately 6km away. Both sites have been cordoned off by investigating officers for further forensic scrutiny.

Local press disclosed that Mr. Johnston made his way to the Hilton Hotel at the stroke of midnight, requesting a beverage. Upon receiving the information that the bar was not open, he reportedly brandished a weapon and confessed to a murder. Following lengthy discourse with police negotiators, the shooting ensued. Authorities subsequently located Ms Ghirxi’s body in her apartment after the shooting incident.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has been canvassed for their remarks. The Irish embassy in Malta stated its core responsibility is to provide assistance to any family members of Mr Johnston who approach them in relation to the event.
