Irish Times Group Buys Gloss Publisher

The Irish Times Group has fully taken over Gloss Publications, a luxury and lifestyle publisher responsible for The Gloss Magazine. The group had already owned a 50% share in the company since 2006. The complete buyout of the remaining shares from Gloss Publications’ co-founders, Jane and Sarah McDonnell, was part of a well-thought-out plan to broaden its range in media and digital services. This followed their earlier acquisition of the prominent death notice site, RIP.ie, this year.

The Gloss was established in 2006 and is released every first Thursday of the month as a glossy print magazine. Its content ranges from lifestyle and interior design to food and travel pieces. Besides publishing the widely demanded Gloss Interiors edition twice a year – in spring and autumn, Gloss Publications also produces magazines for private customers, including educational institutions and organizes exclusive events, such as the annual Gloss Gala.

Deirdre Veldon, the managing director, stated that the incorporation of Gloss Publications into the group would boost their array of “superior journalism and services.” She added that Jane and Sarah McDonnell have successfully developed top-notch editions of The Gloss and The Gloss Interiors with devoted readers in both digital and print formats. The new venture is aimed at further capitalizing on the mutual relationship by exposing their exclusive brand of unique content and premium events to a larger consumer base.

Reports show that by the end of 2022, Gloss Publications had accrued a profit of over €342,000, increasing from €226,514 in 2021. Directors commented that there’s a “constant enhancement in the business,” with revenues inching “nearer” to the levels recorded before the pandemic.

Co-founder, Jane McDonnell, lauded the strategic association they’ve had with Gloss Publications for close to 20 years as instrumental in the company’s successful path. Regarding the acquisition, Sarah McDonnell, Gloss editor, pointed out that their goal was to establish a superior media brand, amalgamating the power of print with digital advantages. The diverse and dedicated readership constantly motivates them to strive for excellence in all their endeavours.
