Irish Times Gets 50 Nominations

The categories in which nominations are scattered cover a broad spectrum like arts, business, crime, foreign affairs reportage, news, investigation, personal views, politics, sports, and special feature journalism. Various journalists such as Naomi O’Leary, Jack Power, Kitty Holland and Colm Keena succeeded in making it into the shortlist for best news reporter of the year.

The nominations for scoop of the year included Naomi O’Leary and Conor Gallagher. O’Leary got the nomination based on the extraordinary story about Irish soldiers training an out-of-control general from Libya, whereas the revelation by Gallagher concerning a former Ku Klux Klan leader guiding Irish right-wing extremists earned him his spot. Additionally, Gallagher made it to the shortlist for crime journalist of the year and investigative journalism of the year.

For political journalism of the year, journalists like Naomi O’Leary, Miriam Lord, Harry McGee, and Jack Horgan-Jones were shortlisted. The category of the year broadsheet columnist saw shortlisting of journalists like Una Mullally, Mark Paul, Patrick Freyne, and Malachy Clerkin.

Joe Brennan has made a mark in the shortlist for business journalist of the year whilst Shauna Bowers and journalists Enda O’Dowd and Bryan O’Brien have been shortlisted for best video and young journalist of the year, respectively.

For their incredible work in arts journalism and criticism Rosita Boland, Deirdre Falvey, Keith Duggan and Lara Marlowe were noted, whilst in the year broadsheet features category; journalists like Mark Paul, Sally Hayden, Kitty Holland, Rosita Boland and Lara Marlowe made the shortlist.

The Women’s Podcast and In The News have both been recognised with a nomination for the year’s best podcast award. Nominations for the title of sportswriter of the year broadsheet were awarded to Malachy Clerkin, Gordon Manning, Denis Walsh and Paul Howard. The nominees shortlist exemplifies the vigorous state of Irish journalism, which consistently maintains accountability and fuels the public with information substantiated by facts, asserted Ann-Marie Lenihan, the CEO of NewsBrands Ireland. The Irish Examiner, the Sunday Times, the Irish Sun, the Irish Independent, Business Post, Journal.ie among others, have all accrued representation on the shortlist. The award winners will be unveiled on November 13th, during a ceremony held at the Mansion House in Dublin.
