Irish Priest Dies in Mexican Roof-Fall

Father Eddie Elliott, a native of Ringsend, Dublin, tragically lost his life on April 12th due to a fall from a ladder while conducting repairs on his Hidalgo home in Mexico. Father Elliott, 75, devoted his life to missionary work with the Divine Word Missionaries in Mexico for more than four decades since his ordination at 32.

His missionary work spanned various parts of Mexico, from Mexico City to Actopan. Beyond his pastoral duties, Father Eddie was celebrated as a gifted artist and vocalist and nurtured a warm relationship with his birthplace, Ringsend, where he was cherished. He made trips back home triennially to reunite with family and friends.

Described by his family as a gentle soul with a compassionate heart and a lively wit, Fr. Elliott also harbored a profound love for animals. While stationed in Mexico City, he found homes for over 30 dogs and at the time of his unfortunate demise, he was tending to six dogs and four cats.

In laboring to remember the remarkable life of Fr Elliot, a family spokesperson expressed: “He had an incredible capacity to see the best in all. His character was such that he left a lasting impression on those he met. Being active and highly energetic, he made time to exercise daily, enjoy lengthy strolls in the mountains with his dogs. He had a passion for music, playing the guitar, singing, and never missed an occasion to share videos of his performances.”

Fr Eddie leaves behind his beloved sister May Pullen, his brother-in-law Jimmy Pullen, and niece Wendy Smyth, plus a wide network of friends and colleagues.

The final farewell for Father Elliott will take place in Mexico at a date yet to be decided. In Ringsend, services to celebrate his life and contributions are to be held at St Patrick’s Church soon.
