Irish man found dead in cell

A 29-year-old Irish male from the northwest region of the Republic has tragically died whilst being held in a Portuguese jail. The reason for his arrest was due to claims that he had gravely attacked a woman, known to him and also in her late 20s, who had also travelled with him to Portugal.

Following the announcement of the alleged assault, it is believed that both the man and woman had travelled together to Portugal for a visit. The Department of Foreign Affairs stated that they are both aware and providing consular assistance for the case. They added, although they are aware of the event, they don’t comment on the specifics of individual instances.

The man was taken into custody in Albufeira, a well-liked spot in the southern Algarve for Irish tourists. It was in his cell here that he was discovered dead on Wednesday morning. However, the news of his passing only came to light on Thursday. More details of the case, including the accusation of the severe assault that took place on Tuesday involving the man from the Republic, are yet to emerge.
