A 51-year-old Irishman from Liverpool, Philip Dooley, has tragically lost his life after he was hit by a car in Italy. The incident occurred shortly before 1am on Tuesday, near to the Orio al Serio Airport in Bergamo. Mr Dooley was attempting to cross the A4 highway, possibly en route to his hotel following his recent arrival in Italy when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
Upon his identification, Italian media sources have reported that Dooley had a ticket for a Champions League match and his passport with him at the time of the accident.
As the investigation into his death continues, two witnesses of the incident are currently cooperating with Italian police. Locally, Merseyside Police have also offered their support and have informed Mr Dooley’s next of kin of the regrettable circumstances.
Liverpool Football Club, upon hearing the news of Mr Dooley’s death, expressed profound sorrow, recognising him as a “lifelong Liverpool fan”. The club’s workers in Milan are coordinating with local authorities, offering support to other fans affected by the incident, and sending condolences to Mr Dooley’s family and friends during this hard period.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is informed of the case and is prepared to provide necessary consular assistance. However, given typical protocol, they have not commented on the specifics of the case.
