“Irish Athletes’ Performance: Olympics Day 13”

Kate O’Connor had a busy evening session, participating in the shot put and 200m sprint after previously appearing in the 100m hurdles and high jump events. O’Connor began her string of performances by finishing seventh in the 100m hurdles heat, clocking a time of 14.02 and gaining 967 points. Shortly after, she excelled in the high jump, setting a season record with a 1.77m leap and scoring 941 points.

In the shot put, O’Connor, now 23 years old, managed a throw of 13.79m, falling just short of her season’s best that was over 14m. However, her 200m sprint was a standout performance, in which she set another season’s best at 24.77. This was incredibly close to her personal record, missed by only 0.04 seconds. After these first four events, O’Connor, under the coaching of her father Michael, is currently ranked 19th. She is looking forward to the javelin throw, arguably her strongest event tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made headlines by shattering the 400m hurdles world record in an exceptional performance.

Over at the Olympics golf competition, Leona Maguire was having a rough day at Le Golf National, trailing by 21 shots from Swiss leader Morgane Metraux. Accumulating a score of 79, Maguire’s two-round total was 13-over-par 157, landing her in a tie for 57th out of 60 golfers. Stephanie Meadow’s performance was slightly better, ending the second day with 8 over. Both golfers struggled with their drives, especially on a course known for its challenging rough. Meadow lost almost five shots to the field in driving, while Maguire lost three.
