Irish Archbishop’s Sudden Death Mourned

Archbishop Noël Treanor, the previous Bishop of Down and Connor, has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 73. Notably, Archbishop Treanor held the position of Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, essentially acting as the Vatican’s representative in Brussels. His sudden death occurred during a Sunday morning walk in Brussels, shortly after feeling unwell.

Born in the town of Monaghan on Christmas day in 1950, Archbishop Treanor was an alumnus of Saint Mary’s Christian Brothers School, located in Co Monaghan. He took up priesthood in 1976 and was elevated to the Bishopric of Down and Connor in 2008. He assumed his diplomatic role as the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union in January 2023.

Archbishop Treanor’s untimely demise has evoked shock and deep sadness, a sentiment shared by the Northern Ireland’s First Minister, Michelle O’Neill. Ulster Unionist MP Robin Swann has fondly remembered him as a gentleman and has appreciated his unwavering support for the Mater hospital and its staff.

The late Archbishop’s contributions to the Trócaire charity, who have acknowledged his remarkable support and service to their mission, ethos, and values on social media, will remain remembered. Archbishop Treanor leaves behind his brother John and sister Mary.
