Ireland’s Women Miss Olympic 4x400m Medal

A valiant attempt to seize an Olympic bronze medal has witnessed Ireland narrowly missing out on the medals in the women’s Olympic 4×400 metres relay. The foursome comprising of Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy and Sharlene Mawdsley ended up in the fourth position, breaking their own national record with a time of 3:19:90.

Without a doubt, the US team emerged as the undisputed champions clinching the gold medal in 3:15.27. The fight for the remaining medals however, was tightly contested. The Netherlands grabbed the silver medal in a thrilling finish with a time of 3:19.50, slightly preceding Great Britain who clocked in at 3:19.72.

Despite their best efforts, Ireland clocked in at 3:19.90 with Mawdsley coming up short of landing them on the podium. This happened in spite of Adeleke’s exceptional second leg, which timed at 48.92 seconds, pushing their position up to second for a while.

Stay tuned for additional updates.
