“Ireland Requires Effective Deportations, Workplace Inspections”

The Taoiseach, Simon Harris, advocates for increased inspections in workplaces catering to undocumented immigrants. He believes numerous “common sense” amendments to Ireland’s immigration policy are necessary. Amid criticism over inadequate shelter for all asylum seekers, caused by an influx in arrivals, the government is under scrutiny. More than 1,700 male international-protection applicants still await state-sponsored accommodation. Recently, the government initiated multi-agency operations to dismantle large, impromptu migrant camps within Dublin city. Opposition to housing asylum seekers was seen in protests throughout towns and villages across the country, with several properties suffering severe damage from suspected arson attacks. On Monday, Mr Harris reassured the public that Ireland can continue extending shelter to asylum seekers, although providing housing might not always be possible. He also voiced the need for swifter processing times for asylum applications, “effective deportations”, and more comprehensive integration for those allowed to stay in Ireland. He added that ensuring workplace legality and promoting welfare consistency are crucial, alongside the contributions made to accommodation by those with status. He stressed the importance of cooperation at a European level.
