“Ireland represents a smaller-scale portrayal of a worldwide housing issue.”

In the latest episode of “Inside Business”, Ciarán Hancock invites economics correspondent Eoin Burke-Kennedy to explore the trifecta of global mega-trends that he believes have propelled the housing dilemma in Ireland. They deliberate on potential solutions, questioning whether government interventions like the Help to Buy Scheme are actually escalating property prices. Furthermore, they conjecture on whether ordinary families will ever be in a position to challenge financial institutions over up and coming properties.

Additionally, they discuss the government’s need to implement severe strategies to enhance housing affordability, and ask why the minimum limit for new construction inspections is currently so low in Ireland. Kevin Hollingsworth, who leads the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland, strongly feels that the national supervision of building guidelines is insufficient and needs to be significantly escalated to prevent a recurrence of issues similar to the flawed Celtic Tiger-era flats or dwellings plagued by mica and pyrite.

The episode is brought to you by producer John Casey, with sound design by JJ Vernon.
