Ireland Lacks Skill in Money

David McWilliams, a renowned economist, podcaster and writer, recently appeared on a show with Hugh Linehan to discuss his latest book, Money: A Story of Humanity. The conversation centred on the nature of money and McWilliams’ stance that it should ideally be a tool to enhance society and the general quality of life. McWilliams further argued in support of initiatives such as the universal basic income, disregarding criticisms of such proposals as “free money” handouts.

McWilliams compares money to a highly innovative human invention. Prohibiting individuals from accessing money due to moral reasons, he contends, is akin to denying someone the use of a steam engine because of its noise – completely illogical.

Despite the considerable wealth in Ireland, McWilliams maintains that the State falters in optimally employing these resources. He recalls when lack of money was a barrier to progress in Ireland, pointing out the irony that too much money now seems to hinder execution, imagination, and ability of those in decision-making roles.
