Iran has criticised Canada for designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist entity, labelling the move as “ill-judged and unusual politically-driven manoeuvre,” as reported by foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani in the semi-official Fars news outlet on Thursday.
Mr Kanaani pointed out that the decision by Canada will not impact on the lawful and defensive power of the Revolutionary Guards, reiterating Tehran’s entitlement to respond as it deems appropriate to this categorisation.
The preceding day, Ottawa classified the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist body, an act that might pave the way for investigations into ex-high-ranking Iranian officials currently residing in Canada.
In 2019, the United States took a parallel action against the Revolutionary Guards, who have been implicated by Western countries in conducting a worldwide terrorism operation.
However, Tehran rebuffs these allegations, maintaining that the elite unit is a state-run establishment tasked with defending national security. – Reuters
