Interpreting tea leaves

Dear Editor,

It’s always been the subject of curiosity amongst the younger folks why I seldom empty my tea cup, usually leaving a bit of tea dancing at the cup’s base. The rationale is my aversion to ingesting the residual tea leaves. Even though my tea of choice for the past five decades has predominantly been from teabags, the conditioned reflex a la Pavlov’s dog propels me to abstain from the unseen tea leaves lurking in my drink. My dear departed aunt, born in 1893 and renowned for her prowess in tea leaf reading, would probably have presaged my peculiar preoccupation during her visits in the past.

Yours sincerely,
Patrick Judge,
Dún Laoghaire,
County Dublin.
