Inquiries into “The Stardust”

Dear Editor,

I vividly remember preparing with excitement for a relative’s wedding on the 14th of February in 1981, when the heartbreaking news of the Stardust tragedy first started to come in. The same blissful couple who tied the knot on that day are now proud grandparents.

The enormity of the grief, the ceaseless emotional torment, and the desperate quest for answers endured by the loved ones of the 48 individuals who tragically lost their lives that fateful morning, is truly beyond my understanding.

It is my sincerest hope that the recent ruling of ‘unlawful killing’ handed down by the coroner’s court will provide some much-needed solace to the grieving families of those who perished that Valentine’s Day. Further, I hope this solace is strengthened through the humanity displayed during the proceedings, and by the respect and individuality accorded to each of the victims by the coroner and the jury.

Yours faithfully,
Michael Gannon,
Kilkenny.
