A file is due to be assembled by Gardaí for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after a woman was apprehended and subsequently released without charge. She was interrogated regarding the fatal road accident in Cork that happened in February, resulting in the death of a mother of two. Sheila Dunne, the victim of the single-vehicle crash in Glanmire, died from her severe injuries. Detectives spent a considerable part of their Thursday querying the only detainee, a woman in her forties.
The woman in question turned herself in early Thursday at Mayfield Garda Station, where she was taken into custody under the stipulations of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act of 1984. A group of investigators spent the day probing into her possible involvement with the accident that happened close to Sarsfield’s Court in Glanmire, where Ms Dunne was discovered in the vehicle’s driver’s seat by the first responders.
The authorities harbored doubts concerning Ms Dunne’s role as a driver, suspecting she might have been placed in the driver’s seat post-collision. The incident in question took place at 7.45 pm. After the accident, Ms Dunne, who was in her fifties, was urgently transported to Cork University Hospital due to her critical injuries and passed away on 13th February.
Gardaí’s hunch that Ms Dunne was not the SUV’s driver at the accident time gained traction from her postmortem results. The SUV involved in the crash was taken for examination by garda technical experts to garner additional light on the circumstances of the accident. Evidence of Ms Dunne’s DNA was found on the passenger’s side airbag, hinting that she might have been sitting in the passenger seat during the mishap.
Investigators are factoring in the scrutiny of mobile phones as pivotal for their case, as it could disclose the identity of the individual steering the SUV during the time it spiraled out of control. Although significant amounts of CCTV footage have been gathered from various locations within Glanmire village including a petrol station, Glanmire Garda Station continues to urge witnesses or anyone who saw a white SUV during the incident to come forward.
