“Independent TDs Undecided on Harris’ Taoiseach Election”

Several Independent TDs have expressed uncertainty regarding their potential endorsement of Simon Harris, Fine Gael leader, for the position of Taoiseach in the upcoming vote. Both Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick and Roscommon–Galway TD Denis Naughten, both ex-Fine Gael members, plan on conferring with Mr. Harris in the coming days before reaching a conclusion for next Tuesday’s ballot.

Likewise, Sean Canney, a Galway East TD and former state minister, is keen to discuss with Mr Harris ahead of the vote. The existing coalition of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Green Party has a precarious majority, their chances strengthened by support from Independent ranks, featuring numerous ex-government party members.

Independent TD Michael Lowry, based in Tipperary and a former Fine Gael Minister, is also considering his position, planning consultations with local councillors and voters prior to deciding. While Mr Harris has dismissed any potential bargains with Independents for endorsement in the coming vote, Mr Lowry acknowledges political reality, asserting that Mr Harris will, undoubtedly, require Independent’s support at some stage in his political leadership.

Peter Fitzpatrick indicates that Mr Harris has extended an invitation for talks, expressing optimism about the future discussion. Sean Canney also expressed a desire to cover important subjects such as housing, cost-of-living and small business concerns with Mr Harris during their meeting.

Mr. Canney has expressed uncertainty on his voting decision until he has an opportunity to discuss certain issues pertaining to rural Ireland with him. The glamour often associated with Independent deals does not influence his decision. Confirmed non-supporters for the new Fine Gael leader include Independent TDs such as Michael Healy-Rae, Danny Healy-Rae, Carol Nolan and Verona Murphy.

Michael McNamara, another Independent TD from Clare, is also inclined to withhold his support for Mr. Harris. His stance is shaped by his assessment of Mr. Harris’s performance to date, particularly in his role as Minister for Health.

In contrast, the former Fianna Fáil TD, Marc MacSharry and ex-Fine Gael TD, Joe McHugh have pledged their support for Mr. Harris.
