Impact of Choices Made by Leaders

Dear Sir, – I couldn’t agree more with Fintan O’Toole’s opinion (“Politicians and their ‘remote’ connection with the aftermath of their decisions”, Opinion & Analysis, October 15th) on how politicians conveniently dissociate themselves from substandard public services.

Instead of embarking on the essential long-term mission of instilling much-needed foresight, aspiration and accountability into the upper echelons of public services, our politicians tend to divert our focus to generous budgets: the modern equivalents of the historical bread and circuses.

Regrettably, there’s little evidence to suggest an imminent shift in this scenario.

For those desiring public services akin to those in Europe, and prepared to foot the bill through taxes required to support these services, they might need to contemplate migrating to a contemporary European nation. – Yours, etc,
