Recently, an Irish citizen tragically lost his life whilst trekking on Italy’s Sardinian island. The individual has been recognised as John Bergin, a 39-year-old man hailing from Dean St, Kilkenny. Prior to his passing, Bergin resided in Drumcondra, Dublin and was known to be an employee of Fingal County Council. His brothers, Paschal, Michael, Stephen, and David, along with his sister Clare, survive him.
The accident unfolded during a family vacation in Italy, where he went hiking with his siblings and didn’t return. The family holiday turned tragic as Bergin chose a different trail from his siblings on Friday afternoon and then disappeared. The subsequent extensive search led to the heartbreaking discovery of his body in a secluded location the following Sunday.
Subsequent reports reveal that the emergency services and Irish Embassy were instrumental in the search efforts – a fact that Bergin’s close relatives profoundly acknowledged in a formal statement. Not only did they express heartfelt gratitude to the mountain rescue team and the emergency responders but also noted the support from the people of Sardinia.
Bergin’s fatal misadventure is believed to have taken place during the third leg of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara mining trail, located between Masua and Cala Domestica. The trail, infamous for its demanding nature, stretches 19.3km along the coastline. The local Italian newspaper, L’unione Sarda, indicates that Bergin might have veered off course and lost his path. This particular journey is notorious for its hazardous section beyond Cantina Belvedere, where trekkers are exposed to falling debris.
Local firefighters led the search operation, with their canines ultimately discovering Bergin’s body. His funeral ceremony is scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday.
