Iconic Hotel in Monaghan Priced at €6 Million

After Nubility Capital halted operations soon after obtaining it in 2023, the ex-four-star Nuremore Hotel in Monaghan, formerly owned by the Huawen Foundation and Chinese-British business figure, Kal Dai, is again up for sale. The listing price is projected to be around €6 million. This time, CBRE agent is managing the sale on Declan De Lacy’s behalf, who is the liquidator for Nubility Capital.

Before it closed in 2023, Nuremore Hotel was a significant hospitality symbol in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, and the broader northeast region for a long time. Built initially in the 1890s, the Hotel found its fame during Julie Gilhooly and her family’s over half a century of ownership. In the 1990s, it gained more recognition when it served as a base for Jack Charlton’s Irish soccer team who practiced for their 1993 World Cup qualifier in Belfast and the tournament finals held the following summer in the US. In 2020, the Gilhoolys retired and sold the business to the Kylin Prime Group.

The Nuremore has been inactive since shutting down on New Year’s Day in 2023. However, CBRE’s hotel division, headed by John Hughes, predicts the hotel and its extensive property to draw both hotel operators and investors’ attention.

The Nuremore Hotel briefly comprises 70 bedrooms and includes amenities such as a bar, a restaurant, a leisure centre and a large function room. The hotel is surrounded by 160 acres of parkland and highlights a championship golf course. It also has two large parking areas accessible from both the Dundalk Road and old Ardee Road.

The function room was well-liked for weddings with choices for an indoor or outdoor ceremony. It provided catering and banquet facilities for approximately 350 guests.

The conference centre, designed specifically for business gatherings and conferences, is another highlight. The Kavanagh conference rooms, as they were referred to, can hold meetings and conferences for a maximum of 20 delegates.

For bigger events accommodating up to 50 delegates, the Kavanagh suite & Carraig rooms offer a garden view. The conference room can host up to 700 delegates in a theatre setting.

The spa and wellness amenities of the hotel encompass therapy rooms, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, and a fitness hub. A pair of outdoor tennis courts are located between the hotel and its adjacent golf course. In the year 1991, Eddie Hackett skilfully crafted an 18-hole championship parkland golf course which incorporated water features at the second, fifth, and eighth holes. The golf course is complemented with an independent clubhouse boasting bar facilities.

The Nuremore Hotel is positioned on the vintage Ardee Road, just a mere two kilometres away from Carrickmacross in County Monaghan. The establishment is located 85km and 100km from Dublin and Belfast each. CBRE’s John Hughes posits, “The erstwhile Nuremore Hotel and Country Club was a prominent presence in the hospitality industry of the northeast which, with a replenishment of capital, can regain its status as a premier resort hotel, drawing substantial business from both above and below the Border.”
