“Hungarian Boxer Respects Algerian Opponent Khelif”

In the Paris Olympics, Algerian welterweight boxer Imane Khelif, who has been embroiled in an eligibility dispute, emerged victorious over her Hungarian opponent, Luca Anna Hamori. The unanimous verdict favouring Khelif in the quarter-finals was accepted by Hamori, who voiced no disagreements. Despite the controversy surrounding Khelif, Hamori expressed her respect for Khelif and acknowledged the toughness of the recent days for all parties involved while adding that the situation wasn’t Khelif’s fault.

Khelif and Taiwanese featherweight Lin Yu-ting have faced scrutiny at the Paris Olympic Games due to a gender-related controversy that has attracted significant media attention and social media debate. Both athletes were accused of breaching the International Boxing Association (IBA) eligibility rules in 2023, which prohibit athletes with XY chromosomes from participating in women’s competitions. However, the IBA did not reveal the precise reasons for their disqualification.

No evidence has been discovered that either boxer has a genetic condition leading to a Difference of Sexual Development (DSD). Following the clearance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), both were allowed to compete in Paris.

The controversy was highlighted when Angela Carini, an Italian boxer, withdrew during her round-of-16 match against Khelif after sustaining multiple powerful punches. The issue was raised with IOC chief Thomas Bach by Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni.

However, Balazs Furjes, the representative for Hungary’s IOC, confirmed that there was never a question about Hamori not competing against Khelif. In response to queries regarding the fairness of the match, Furjes expressed unwavering faith in the International Olympic Committee making the appropriate decisions.

We, as Hungarians, consistently demonstrate our readiness to bravely tackle any challenge, which is precisely what Luca has recently exemplified. We stride boldly in the face of adversity, prepared to do battle, regardless of the difficulty. Hamori then expressed his best wishes to his adversary and the other finalists, hoping for their success.
