Material properties
Fiberglass material on its own is almost useless. To get the best out of this material, it needs to be cured with a kind of glue called resin. This combination of epoxy and fiberglass is known as a composite and is extremely strong and rigid for its relatively low weight.
It is important to choose the correct type of fiberglass for your application. The type is defined by the kind of glass fibers use :
A-Glass
A high alkali glass with good chemical resistance but less electrical resistance.
C-Glass
Extremely high chemical resistance.
E-Glass
GRP that uses these fibers are extremely effective as an electrical insulator.
S-Glass
This is the strongest glass fiber and is used in fiberglass cars.
Choose your components
Before you start fiberglass work, purchase the correct kind of fiberglass materials.
Material
Look for chopped strand material (CSM) and use the above guide to select the best kind of fiber. For most people, S or E glass will be best.
Glue
Next, purchase a resin and a release agent to complement your CSM. Your local hardware store will be able to advise you as to which products are most suitable for your particular needs.
Other materials
In addition, you will also need some latex gloves, mold release wax, a paint brush, a mixing bowl and a well ventilated work area.
Manufacture
Safety
Do not let CSM touch your skin. Handle it only with long sleeves and gloves. Additionally, resin is a respiratory hazard. People with breathing difficulties should consult their doctor before handling it and may need to wear a solvent respirator.
Prepare the mold
The mold should have been prepared well in advance and carefully polished with wet and dry paper for a quality finish. Once this has been done and it has been cleaned with rubbing alcohol, coat the interior of the mold with release wax and the liquid release agent.
Lay up the CSM
Mix the resin and apply a thin layer to the inside of the mold. Cover this with a sheet of CSM and use the paint brush to remove all air pockets. Repeat this process and expect to have 3-5 layers depending on the part.
Release
After curing overnight, gently break out the part and finish with polish.
