How to Choose an Electric Bike: Practical Advice and Buying Guide

Some people love walking, others cannot stand it and move by car even for short-distance routes. There are also people who are in love with cycling and try to use this means of transportation as often as possible. However, riding a bicycle for a long time or on steep paths requires a lot of effort and can be rather tiring. Is there an alternative? Well, you could consider choosing an electric bike. Here are some tips on how to pick one!

Different Classes of E-Bikes

The first issue to consider is that there are three different kinds of e-bikes:

  • Class 1: this kind of e-bike is usually called pedal-assist or pedelec, as it assists you while you pedal. It stops providing assistance at 20 mph/32 kph. The use of this electric bike is allowed on most roads where normal bikes are allowed. Moreover, you do not need an additional license to be able to use it.
  • Class 2: in addition to the assistance when pedaling, it also comes with a throttle-powered mode. This kind of electric bike is more common in countries such as the US and China. In Europe Class 1 is more popular.
  • Class 3: this e-bike, also known as the speed pedelec, is pedal-assisted just like the pedelec. However, it allows you to reach a higher speed since the assistance stops at 28 mph/45 kph.

Choosing the Right Electric Bike

Now that you are aware of the different classes of electric bikes, it is all up to you and your needs. In fact, you should think about why you want to buy a bike and how you are going to use it. For example, do you need it for commuting or are you going to use it on mountain paths? What is your budget? How often will you use it?

The answers to these questions are very important since the range of e-bikes is very wide. Straight bicycles – also called Dutch bicycles – are perfect for the city. Moreover, they are comfortable and affordable. Mountain bikes, on the other hand, are meant to be used for sports and mountain hiking. These kind of bikes, however, are more expensive and are heavier. The electric VTC is the middle ground between straight bicycles and mountain bikes. It can be used both in the city and for moderate sports outings. Last but not least, remember to check what kind of battery the e-bike has and what kind of autonomy it can provide.

Electric bikes are not only beneficial for your wallet, your time and to keep you in shape – they are also an eco-friendly means of transportation.
