Homeless Fatalities in the Dublin Area

Dear Sir/Madam,

The passing of 40 homeless individuals in Dublin up to this point in the current year presents a disturbing picture (News, October 22nd). Some of these souls were familiar to us. Despite the multiple interventions from non-governmental organisations, public bodies, and their respective families, these individuals couldn’t escape homelessness in our capital city before their untimely deaths.

This situation highlights the intricate issue of homelessness, which is frequently oversimplified as merely a lack of housing. This, in turn, creates challenges that are complicated to comprehend and accordingly, tough to resolve.

It is our earnest wish that those departed may now find rest and that their families be solace in the notion that while alive, regardless of being away from an established “home,” these individuals were engaged with relevant services. – Yours faithfully,

Alice Leahy,
Head of Services,
Alice Leahy Trust,
Dublin 8.
