Dublin’s City Council is currently working in conjunction with the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) to provide accommodation for different asylum seekers who have set up temporary camps in a local park known as Herbert Park. The makeshift site was created following the dismantling of several others around areas like the Grand Canal.
The spokesperson for the council made it clear that they are partnering with IPAS to secure accommodation for the persons that have taken residence in Herbert Park. The clarification stated there are available accommodations, thus expressing the confidence that the issue would be resolved later that same day.
The Taoiseach had previously indicated, on Friday, his willingness to consider migration reforms that would involve processing asylum seekers in third countries. This policy is being championed by the European People’s Party (EPP), of which Simon Harris’s Fine Gael party is a member.
Roderic O’Gorman, the Minister for Integration, however, spotlighted that the Government should be more preoccupied with domestic immigration policies. This was following the manifestation of another hub of homeless asylum seekers in Dublin 4 quickly after another was cleared from the Grand Canal on Thursday.
Post the Grand Canal clearance on Thursday, as many as 109 displaced asylum seekers had accommodations offered to them. By Friday evening, the Ballsbridge camp had been cleared with the then residing folk offered shelter in Citywest.
This immediate action was attributed to the local law enforcement’s interventions in Donnybrook on Friday over safety concerns. This was after a video was posted online Thursday night showcasing the freshly pitched tents.
The minor camp, consisting of nine tents, was situated on Clyde Road’s intersection with Wellington Road, just beside the pavement on a grassy patch of ground bordering an apartment complex. Although the site was vacant Friday morning, remnants of human occupation such as flip-flops, water bottles, and sleeping bags were located.
